The Architecture of Knowledge: 5 Extraordinary Middle Eastern Libraries

By Mehar Deep Kaur - July 16, 2026

For millennia, the Middle East has stood as the undisputed cradle of the written word. It was here, upon the sun-baked clay tablets of Mesopotamia, that humanity first learned to record its stories, and where the grand House of Wisdom in Baghdad illuminated the Golden Age of Islam. Today, this reverence for scholarship is experiencing a breathtaking architectural renaissance. Across the region, nations are raising monumental libraries that boldly reimagine what a repository of knowledge can be.

Here are six remarkable libraries where history, architecture, and literature converge in spectacular harmony:

Rising from the stark desert landscape of Dhahran, Ithra is a monumental triumph of contemporary design. Conceived by Snøhetta, the complex’s striking organic forms are clad in an intricate skin of bent stainless-steel tubes, reflecting the harsh sun. These reflective silver tubes were strategically chosen to mirror the aesthetic of the pipes traditionally used to extract oil, symbolizing a shift toward energy fueled by human creativity instead of fossil fuels. Fun fact: the building’s boulder-like composition is deeply symbolic; subterranean levels represent the past, the ground level embodies the present, and the soaring Knowledge Tower reaches toward the future.

The library within this celebrated cultural hub is a four-story marvel of fluid spatial planning, specifically designed to foster interactive learning. It houses over a quarter of a million volumes, but its true genius lies in its interior morphology. With a diverse collection of over 315,000 physical books available in Arabic and English, it stands out as an inclusive educational resource. The spaces flow seamlessly into one another without rigid barriers, featuring a central atrium bathed in diffused natural light. The building was carefully integrated into the environment, earning a LEED Gold certificate.

In the heart of Education City, the Qatar National Library emerges from the desert landscape like folded paper or a massive diamond resting on the earth. Conceived by renowned architect Rem Koolhaas and OMA, the building’s interior is a masterpiece of spatial design intended to express the enduring vitality of the book. Without distinct floors or hidden rooms, the vast interior is built on sweeping terraces of marble bookshelves doubling as structural floors. These unique white marble shelves seamlessly integrate essential infrastructure, concealing artificial lighting, ventilation, and a highly efficient book return system within their construction.

Spanning 42,000 square meters, this monumental open-plan room provides space for over a million books, along with a column-free bridge that hosts media spaces, study tables, and a multipurpose auditorium. The exterior corrugated-glass facade gently filters bright natural daylight, working in tandem with a reflecting aluminum ceiling to illuminate the core without damaging delicate pages. Clad in elegant beige travertine, this heritage collection can be accessed directly from the outside, acting as an autonomous portal into early Arab-Islamic civilization.

Situated along the historic Dubai Creek, the Mohammed Bin Rashid Library is an architectural marvel honoring Islamic heritage. Designed by a global consortium, the striking seven-story structure is shaped like a rehal, the traditional wooden book rest used for centuries to hold the Holy Quran. Covering an impressive 54,000 square meters, this vast facility houses over a million printed and digital books alongside more than 6 million research dissertations. Beyond its profound structural symbolism, it boasts an incredibly advanced automated storage and retrieval system.

To commemorate Sharjah’s designation as a UNESCO World Book Capital, Foster and Partners designed a stunning library for the future. The House of Wisdom is a highly transparent, two-story structure defined by its massive, overhanging roof that appears to float effortlessly. This cantilevered canopy provides crucial shade, shielding the interior from harsh desert glare while filtering light through geometric aluminum screens. Designed around a centralized courtyard that channels daylight deep into the core, the 40,386 square meter layout creates a continuous flow of space.

Unlike traditional silent archives, it was conceived as a vibrant social hub and a high-tech book machine. It features fabrication labs and an Espresso Book Machine capable of printing and binding bespoke paperbacks in minutes. The “Fab Lab” acts as a creative sandbox, generously equipped with 3D printers and laser cutters for collaborative experimentation. Bamboo screens across the lower level can be dynamically shifted by visitors for privacy or additional glare control. The tranquil outdoor gardens feature The Scroll, a spiraling steel monument by British sculptor Gerry Judah, echoing the ancient Arabic scrolls of antiquity.

Bibliotheca Alexandrina, Alexandria, Egypt

Conceived as a stunning revival of the ancient library founded by Alexander the Great, is designed by the renowned architectural firm Snøhetta. The building’s sweeping, circular form emerges from the shores of the Mediterranean Sea like a massive, tilting disc. This dramatic inclination is deeply symbolic, intended to recall the cyclical nature of knowledge and represent a second sun rising over the Mediterranean. The exterior curved wall is a masterpiece in its own right, clad in massive blocks of granite intricately carved with letters and characters from alphabets all over the world.

Inside, the library is an architectural triumph of light and space. Its colossal, 20,000-square-meter main reading room spans seven cascading terraces, designed to accommodate up to 2,000 readers in a single, unified environment. To protect the millions of volumes it houses, the striking glass and aluminum roof features north-facing skylights that bathe the vast, amphitheater-like space in gentle, indirect natural daylight without exposing delicate pages to harmful UV rays.
